The Concept of Rapid Recovery

It is common for patients to remain in hospital for up to 10 days after a hip replacement, but in Basingstoke we have been able to reduce this to 3 to 4 days for most patients. This reduces the risks of complications associated with prolonged hospital stay (hospital acquired infection and deep venous thrombosis) and improves patients' sense of well-being.

As a team, John Britton, Geoff Stranks and Kevin Conn have optimized surgery by using minimally invasive techniques and use the most modern hip implants. However we have found that the most important factor is patient education; a patient who knows what to expect and has practised using crutches before surgery will mobilize more quickly.

All patients undergoing hip replacement in Basingstoke will attend special classes prior to their surgery. In addition they receive a DVD, which has been produced by us. The DVD explains the procedure of hip replacement and illustrates all the necessary physiotherapy exercises.

Mr Britton has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Basingstoke since 1990. His interests are in replacement surgery of the hip, knee and shoulder; he has a large experience in the management of complex problems associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

Mr Conn was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the North Hampshire Hospital in 2003. His interests are in foot surgery and lower limb arthroplasty.
